BetterReviews vs Okendo: Which Shopify Review App Is Right for You?

An honest comparison of BetterReviews and Okendo for Shopify stores. AI-guided conversations vs attribute-based forms — pricing, features, and what each does best.

Updated March 19, 2026

The short version

Okendo is a mature platform (18,000+ stores, $31M funded) built around attribute-based review forms and a growing ecosystem of loyalty, quizzes, referrals, and surveys. It’s excellent for brands that want structured product attributes (“True to Size,” “Skin Type”) alongside their reviews.

BetterReviews takes a fundamentally different approach to review collection. Instead of a form, customers have an AI-guided conversation that draws out details — specific use cases, comparisons, emotional moments, and photos. The result is reviews detailed enough to use as ad copy.

The question isn’t which is “better” — it’s which approach matches how you want to collect and use reviews.

The pricing gap

Okendo’s $19 Essential plan is nearly identical to their Free plan — you’re paying $19/mo for a higher order limit. The features most stores need (AI summaries, Q&A) start at $119/mo. Klaviyo integration — which most Shopify stores use — requires the $299/mo Power plan.

BetterReviews includes AI conversations, AI summaries, and moderation at $49/mo. No per-order pricing means your bill doesn’t spike on Black Friday.

Where Okendo wins on pricing: If you need less than 50 orders/month, Okendo’s free plan is hard to beat. BetterReviews doesn’t have a free plan — the entry point is $49/mo.

The core difference: how reviews are collected

This is where the two products diverge most.

Okendo’s approach: structured forms

Okendo sends an email after purchase. The customer clicks through to a review form with a star rating, text box, photo upload, and (on higher plans) attribute questions like “What’s your age range?” or “Is this true to size?”

This is the standard approach every review app uses. It works — Okendo has collected millions of reviews this way. The attribute data is genuinely useful, especially for fashion and beauty brands where shoppers want to find reviews from people with similar body types or skin tones.

The limitation: forms produce form-shaped reviews. Short, structured, predictable. Most customers leave a star rating, write one sentence, and move on. The attribute data is valuable, but the review text itself is often thin.

BetterReviews’ approach: AI conversations

BetterReviews also sends an email after purchase. But instead of a form, the customer enters a conversation with an AI that knows their specific order. The AI asks natural follow-up questions — “What specifically do you use this for?” “How does it compare to what you had before?” “Any photos?” — and adapts based on the customer’s answers.

A quality assessment system scores each conversation on six dimensions (specificity, use cases, numbers, emotional detail, comparisons, photos) and keeps probing until the review is rich enough to use as marketing copy. If the customer gives short answers, the AI wraps up quickly. If they’re engaged, it draws out more detail.

Customers can always skip to a simple form if they prefer.

What this means in practice: Stamped’s Smart Assist — which uses AI prompts (not conversations) — saw a 40% improvement in review quality vs Judge.me on the same products. A full back-and-forth conversation draws out even more detail.

Where Okendo genuinely excels

Attribute-based reviews

No app does this as well as Okendo. If your products vary by size, fit, skin type, or other personal attributes, Okendo’s structured attribute data helps shoppers find reviews from people like them. This is genuinely valuable for fashion, beauty, supplements, and any category where personal characteristics affect the product experience. BetterReviews doesn’t have this feature.

Platform breadth

Okendo isn’t just a reviews app — it’s a customer marketing platform with loyalty programs, quizzes, referrals, and surveys all sharing unified customer data. If you want one vendor for all of that, Okendo reduces app sprawl. BetterReviews is focused exclusively on reviews and review intelligence.

Scale and trust

18,000+ stores, SOC 2 certified, Shopify Plus certified, $31M in funding from Index Ventures and Craft Ventures. Customers include SKIMS, Rhode, NOBULL, and Harry’s. Okendo has been operating since 2017. BetterReviews is new. That matters if you’re a large brand that needs proven scale and enterprise compliance.

Retail syndication

Via Bazaarvoice, Okendo can syndicate your reviews to 1,900+ retail partners (Walmart, Target, Nordstrom, etc.). If your products are sold in physical retail alongside DTC, this is a feature BetterReviews cannot match today.

Where BetterReviews has the edge

Review quality

Traditional forms produce traditional reviews. AI conversations produce reviews with substance — specific use cases, emotional detail, honest comparisons. These are the reviews you can screenshot and put in a Meta ad. BetterReviews exists because we believe the quality of each review matters more than the volume.

All-plan AI features

BetterReviews includes AI conversations, AI summaries, and AI moderation on every plan starting at $49/mo. Okendo locks AI features behind the $119/mo Growth plan. If you’re a store doing $1-5M/year and want AI-powered reviews, BetterReviews is $840/year less than Okendo’s equivalent tier.

Flat pricing

BetterReviews bills a flat monthly rate regardless of order volume. Okendo’s per-order limits mean a great sales month (Black Friday, product launch) could push you into a higher tier. No surprise bills.

Page speed

BetterReviews’ widget renders server-side with zero JavaScript on first paint. Review apps are the second-worst app category for Shopify page speed, adding an average of 147ms to page load. Every 100ms costs roughly 7% in conversions. Our widget is built to add nothing.

What real Okendo merchants say

These are from verified Shopify App Store reviews — not cherry-picked, but representative of recurring themes in 1-star reviews.

On support quality:

“Every single time we have an issue the customer service cannot help. It is absolutely astonishing the incompetence we experience from the customer service every. single. time.” — KING CAVE, Feb 2025

“It’s been like sending messages into a void.” — The Sofa Cover Crafter, Dec 2025 (4-year customer)

“Here are the docs, good luck” — Cuddle Sprouts, Jan 2026 (describing support on lower-tier plans)

On pricing:

“The pricing is comically misleading.” — WYLDE GOLD, Jun 2025

“Fees for the app are crazy!! ROI on it is minimal.” — PK9 Gear, Mar 2026

Context: Okendo has a 4.8/5 rating overall from 1,319 reviews. 95% are 5-star. These complaints represent less than 3% of reviews — but they cluster around support quality on non-Power plans and pricing confusion. If you’re on the Power plan ($299/mo) with a dedicated CSM, the experience is different.

Who should choose Okendo

  • Stores that need attribute-based reviews (fashion, beauty, supplements)
  • Brands that want one platform for reviews + loyalty + quizzes + referrals + surveys
  • Enterprise stores that need Bazaarvoice retail syndication to Walmart, Target, etc.
  • Stores that need SOC 2 compliance and are willing to pay $299/mo for full features

Who should choose BetterReviews

  • Stores that want higher-quality review content for marketing (ads, email, social)
  • Stores frustrated with paying $119-$299/mo for AI features and integrations
  • Brands that care about page speed and want zero-JS widget rendering
  • Stores that value flat pricing over per-order billing
  • Merchants who want AI features on every plan, not just premium tiers

Switching from Okendo

If you’re considering the switch, we have a detailed migration guide covering export, what you keep (and what you lose — including a honest take on attribute reviews), and common fears. The short version:

  1. Export your reviews from Okendo (Settings > Import/Export)
  2. Import to BetterReviews — we support Okendo’s export format
  3. Run both side-by-side during a transition period if needed
  4. Rich snippets recover within 2-4 weeks as Google re-indexes your product pages

New AI conversations start collecting richer reviews immediately. Your imported reviews still display and count toward summaries.
